Ewan Pearson (Maas, World of Apples) really shows his range on his remix collection, SMALL CHANGE. From straight-up house (with bits of revolutionary radicalism thrown in for good measure on Count Zero’s “Blue Boogaloo”) to more upfront tech-house (the relentless thump on Leftfield’s “Dub Gussett” or the brightness of Chaser’s “Blue Planet”) to tech-tinged downtempo (Nova Nova’s aching “Bewildered”), Pearson shows off his versatility in reinterpreting others’ work. And that’s only his Maas alter-ego! His World of Apples mixes are just as entrancing, if not more so. His take on Christian Zimmerman’s “Diary of a Lost Girl” shimmers like a desert mirage; Nemo’s “Darkest Day” is a torch song for the hip-hop generation. The weaker tracks (like Jeb Loy Nichol’s “Say Goodbye to Christopher”), I’m tempted to attribute to the quality of the original, but that’s not an excuse. But Maas’ slow and thoughtful take on his own “Look at Me Now, Falling” is more than enough to make up for deficiencies elsewhere.
